Hi Rhonda,

We are a mid size suburban library and we implemented My Millennium about 4 years ago. It allows patrons to view their records, renew materials, monitor their reserves, maintain a list of all items checked out (reading history), and maintain a list of prefered searches. Some patrons use all features and some use mainly 2 features--online renewals and reserves, which are the most popular. According to our monthly statistics, about 50% of all renewals are done by patrons online.

The key is good advertising of these services and clear instructions. Once patrons know what services exist and how easy it is to use them, patrons will be very supportive. We were a little nervous at first about our patrons' ability to handle online renewals, so we printed bookmarks with instructions and included them in checkouts. The world has become very sophisticated and comfortable with online services--heck, if they can do their banking online, they can certanly renew their material online. We continue to offer telephone renewals, reserves, etc. for those patron who prefer that service.
