I update the billed items to lost after they have been in billed status
for about 30 days. An item stays in lost status for about 60 days
before being deleted. That gives about 90 days for the patron to return
the thing before it is deleted. If it is deleted and then they return
it, we simply reinstate it.

Subject: [IUG] What do you do with your billed (aka long overdue) items?
I'm hoping that someone can share their database maintenance workflow
with me. We have a monthly schedule for purging item records that have
statuses of missing, lost, lost&paid, withdrawn:
* Items with a status of w (withdrawn) for more than 30 days are
purged.
* Items with status m (missing) for more than 30 days are updated
to status l (lost).
* Items with status l or $ (lost & paid) for more than 90 days are
purged.
However we realized recently that we have not worked items with status
of billed into our purge cycle. Sometimes people get their bill and
bring back or renew the items so the status is cleared. However the
rest - which may or may not have the customer go into collections - are
just sitting there. We are currently just suppressing them.
I'd like to hear how you are handling these long overdue items to get
some ideas. Any feedback is appreciated.
