[IUG] Combining Location Codes & Ramifications

Hello,
 
We are considering combining items with obsolete Location Codes (obsolete
due to a change in funding structure) with another group of Location Codes.
Both these Location Code groups, along with another group of codes, belong
to one Library Branch. Combining the two would eliminate at least one of
these Branches. Has anyone done this sort of thing, and what potential
problems could arise? One concern is the effect of titles with item level
holds or items in transit. Please share your experiences. 
 
I have read the information provided on CSDirect concerning 'deleting'
location codes, but that is a different thing altogether.
