Per the Release Notes you can upgrade to JRE 1.6.0_02 at your
convenience if you are already on JRE 1.5.0. Once you upgrade the server
(and make those few wwwoption changes that are needed right away) you
are set. You do not have to do anything to the client machines until you
are ready to upgrade the JRE.

The memory issue is a big one for us as well. A bunch of our student
workstations (mostly milacq & milcat) don't have 1 G. They are finding
it slow going now so I don't think they'll do okay under 2007 until we
upgrade their memory. That is what will dictate when we can upgrade to
the new Release.

Since you haven't done an upgrade before I'll tell you the way I like to
do it. I run the preparation phase in the afternoon so I can call III
during our normal business hours if needed. That phase can be done while
others are doing their normal work, though I do like to warn them not to
run create lists or global updates or anything else that would be
tasking the system. Then I answer no to the question of whether I want
to continue. This is step 14 in the checklist. I come in the next
morning before the library opens and run the commit phase (which seems
to be called the conversion phase in this release). That way I don't
have to come in quite so early in the morning to do it all in one step
and I can be fore-warned of any problems in the initial step. We run a
full unattended backup every night so I don't have a problem with that
requirement before starting the second phase.

It isn't as big a deal with the new servers but back in the day
(sounding like an old timer) the whole process used to take longer.
According to my notes the second phase of the 2006 upgrade took 20
minutes. With the reindexing of this release it might be a bit longer.
