The Principal Cataloger/Assistant Department Head plans and manages the staff (7 FTE) and daily operations of the Serials, Monograph, Copy-Cataloging and Catalog Maintenance Units of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department. Responsibilities include serving as a resource person regarding cataloging issues both within the Department and in other areas of the Libraries. The Principal Cataloger performs original and complex cataloging and authority work for all types of formats and manages and contributes to cataloging and metadata for digital projects. Leads or coordinates selected cataloging projects to be either outsourced or managed internally. As a member of the Cataloging Management Committee, the Principal Cataloger participates in developing local cataloging policies and procedures, and in local implementation of changes in national standards, rules and best practices for cataloging. In consultation with the Department Head and appropriate staff, the position will help to determine needs, design training curricula including coordinating and delivering training and establishing performance standards for cataloging staff. The Principal Cataloger is expected to maintain awareness of and engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, bibliographic and authority control, and knowledge management. Other duties include participation in library committees, task forces, and special projects, particularly those related to cataloging, metadata application and bibliographic control. The position reports to the Head of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department. Working hours are normally Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.
