Technical Services Librarian
Description and Duties of Job:
The Technical Services Librarian reports to the Associate Director of the Mabee Legal Information Center and provides leadership, management, and evaluation of all aspects of the library’s technical services functions, procedures and related staff. Specific responsibilities include cataloging, serials, technical processing, government documents, archives, bindery and mail delivery. Personally catalogs all law serials, electronic resources, integrated resources, microforms and original works. Maintains cataloging & serials statistics and produces management reports; trains, directly supervises, and evaluates two library assistants. Prepares the archival collections of the College of Law for appropriately restrictive use by the national legal community. Shares reference rotation, including evening, weekend, and substitute schedules. Specializes in the teaching of the integrated on-line catalog to instruct students in the basics of locating and understanding the records for treatises and periodicals, etc., including providing on-line demonstrations on both these topics and others as assigned by the Director.
Specific Skill Requirements and Essential Job Functions:
MLS or MLIS from an American Library Association accredited Library School; familiarity with OCLC for cataloging and authority work; familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Millennium or other integrated on-line catalog bibliographic system; proficiency applying Library of congress MARC classification tables, authorities and subject headings, AACR2R, and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations; basic knowledge of PC applications; excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills; strong service orientation; ability to work independently as well as in a team environment and to work collaboratively with diverse individuals at all levels; strong analytical and organizational abilities and excellent project management skills; and meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in Technical Services in an academic law library; previous experience in teaching library patrons, preparing training materials for the OPAC; creating bibliographies; knowledge of legal materials and the legal publishing industry; and experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. on-line catalog.
