MONOGRAPH CATALOGUER
Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for the continuing, full time position of Monograph Cataloguer. The Cataloguer will catalogue items in all formats; provide training and be a resource person for the Monograph Cataloguing and Preparations Units, engage in projects to analyse and import metadata into the catalogue, and assist in developing workflows to maximize efficiency within the Division. This position reports to the Head, Cataloguing Division.
We seek a dynamic, flexible cataloguing specialist with a strong background in automated systems and keen interest in broader issues of bibliographic control. A demonstrated commitment to and success in consultative management is essential. The successful applicant for this position will possess excellent communication, training and computer skills.
Setting:
The Cataloguing Division consists of the Head, 1 librarian and 11 staff and serves all three campuses. Approx 35,000 monograph items, of all types, are processed each year. The Division, located at the Burnaby Campus, includes monograph cataloguing, catalogue maintenance, preparations and monograph bindery.
Simon Fraser University is a comprehensive university with approximately 20,000 FTE students. The main campus is in Burnaby, with satellite campuses in downtown Vancouver and Surrey. The W.A.C. Bennett Library is in Burnaby. The Library has approximately 150 staff and uses the Innovative Interfaces, Millennium integrated library system. The SFU Library’s highly evolved networked environment provides access to online indexes, databases and many full-text resources. The Library supports a wide range of programs and courses across all disciplines through its print and electronic collections, reference and instructional services, and liaison program. We serve an ethnically diverse student population including many mature or returning students, most of whom live off-campus and many of whom work part-time while attending university.

ASSIGNMENT:
* Assist and advise Head, Cataloguing Division in determining, investigating, and implementing workflow improvements and efficiencies in cataloguing operations.
* Direct special projects such as obtaining upgraded records for items in the cataloguing queue, and investigating the possibility of moving from a local classification system, to use of a standard system.
* Work closely with the Head, Cataloguing Division, the Head, Serials/Acquisitions Division and others in the Division to ensure all units work well together.
* May act for the Head, Cataloguing Division when she is away.
* Train and be a resource for all copy cataloguers and the Preparations staff (Added copy/volumes, binding, labelling, catalogue maintenance)
* Participate in the development, documentation, and evaluation of policies and procedures. Write documentation for cataloguing operations.
* Keep abreast of developments in technical services and the III system, and assist in the adoption and implementation of new technologies and methods
* Create training materials; resolve complex bibliographic problems
* Find, analyse, and import metadata into the library catalogue for projects involving sets of materials.
* Perform full original cataloguing for items in all formats.
* Assign call numbers and subject headings for incomplete records, including using local classification schemes. Maintain the local Canadian Literature Classification scheme.
* Oversee authority file policy and procedures.
* Liaise with other Units, Divisions and individuals within the Library and the University to achieve the best possible service to the users of the Library.
* Provide selected service with other library units (e.g. Collections, Public service points, etc.) as required.
* Work with other library staff on project teams and committees.
* Develop professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis.
Qualifications
Required:
- MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution.- Two (2) years cataloguing experience at a professional level using an automated system. and/or a combination of equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
- Knowledge of all aspects of the bibliographic control of materials: cataloguing (descriptive, subject analysis, classification) in all formats, OPAC display systems, international standards, metadata and current trends in bibliographic control.
- Very good knowledge of computer systems and the interoperability between systems to allow data to be transferred between them.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, including demonstrated technical writing ability.
- Demonstrated skill in planning and delivering training.
- Demonstrated ability to assist staff with questions related to policy and procedure
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all library staff in order to improve library service delivery to the public.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing a high level of support services.
- A proven ability to work well under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to manage change in an automated environment
- Familiarity with trends in technical services.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of a scripting program such as Perl.- Ability to assist students and faculty from a variety of disciplines in a busy research environment.
- Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language (pref.: French, German, Spanish or Italian)
- Experience with OCLC in a cataloguing environment
- Experience working with the III system
- Familiarity with trends in changing data coding standards such as Dublin Core, metadata, etc.
