Department Head, Library Public Services, Ferris State University
Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for the overall planning, organization, direction, coordination and assessment of the department’s functional areas including reference services, library instruction, circulation and stack maintenance, library reserves, interlibrary loan, document delivery services, and support of the university’s distance programs. Ensures strong customer orientation in all operations of the department. Manages the department’s financial and human resources and monitors ongoing job audits, performance evaluations, promotion, tenure post-tenure review processes. Plans and coordinates quality service improvement and assessment projects. Coordinates departmental processes and work flows within the activities of other functional areas of the Library and works collaboratively with other university departments. Supports and promotes professional development for all Public Services staff. Prepares departmental planning documents, including strategic planning, budget, and annual unit action planning materials. Oversees collection development and management of the Reference Collection’s print, digital and multimedia resources.
Qualifications:

Required - ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Broad understanding and awareness of national and international issues and trends in reference services, information literacy, library instruction, and access services, including library application of Web 2.0 tools. Ability to efficiently use pertinent computer and information technologies appropriate in an administrative setting (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, electronic calendar). Ability to maintain a positive and effective relationship with the University’s faculty and staff. Ability to communicate and work effectively in a diverse setting. At least five years of recent full-time, progressively responsible experience, including at least three years of supervisory and management experience in a (preferably academic) library. Preferred ­ Second Master’s or earned doctoraate.
Salary:

$60,000-$70,000 for a 12-month appointment, plus an excellent benefit package valued at approximately 45% of base salary. Comprehensive benefits (after applicable eligibility and accrual periods) include 20 days vacation, two days personal leave, paid holidays, insurance (health, dental, vision, life, disability), medical reimbursement account, retirement system options (e.g., TIAA-CREF, Fidelity) with 12% University contribution, several supplemental retirement annuity options, tuition waiver, and generous support for professional activities.
