Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services (University of Miami)

The University of Miami Libraries seeks an innovative professional to provide leadership and management for the Libraries’ Cataloging & Metadata Services for digital, print, media, and other materials.

POSITION: Reporting to the Director for Information Management and Systems, the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services is responsible for the planning , development, and assessment of cataloging and metadata operations, procedures, services, and activities; supervises, evaluates, develops, and mentors four faculty and 16 staff; provides leadership and directs the enhancement of metadata infrastructures and practices; develops assessment strategies and maintains statistics; investigates, evaluates, makes recommendations, implements, and monitors outsourced cataloging and/or processing; identifies, investigates, and implements new procedures, and promotes the use of the latest technologies to effectively support the organization of and access to electronic information; works collaboratively with acquisitions staff to manage electronic resources tools & services; oversees development departmental web development; responsible for the integrity of descriptive data records; coordinates policies and procedures with Information Management and Systems and other library department heads; serves as a standing member of the Department Representatives Group; works collaboratively and effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students; supports participation in national cooperative cataloging programs; keeps abreast of trends, best practices, and standards for cataloging and metadata; participates in services activities for the Libraries and the University.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science; minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible professional cataloging and metadata practice and management experience in an academic or research library; demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of national cataloging standards and practices [AACR2, LC Classification, LCSH, MARC formats], issues and trends; extensive knowledge and experience in metadata creation, practices, and standards [e.g. Dublin Core, XML, METS, MODS, Precis, and/or VRA], and awareness of national and international issues and trends; demonstrated innovative & creative approaches for improving technical services operations and an interest and involvement in emerging digital information environments; demonstrated successfulsupervisory experience and proven management skills; demonstrated ability to manage a budget and produce analytical reports based on statistical data; experience with national bibliographic utilities (OCLC) and integrated library systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.; demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population; demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; evidence of continued professional development, involvement, and contribution.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications of the person selected. This is a non-tenure track twelve-month faculty appointment at the Associate, or Professor rank. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the heart of the campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, and the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library, and the Louis Calder Memorial Library. The campus also has an independent Law library. The Libraries provide support and services for approx. 10,100 undergraduates, 5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The Libraries has a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and is a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, OCLC, RLG, and SOLINET.
