The Ottenheimer Library of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) invites applications for the position of Director for Public Services, job #267. This is a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, leading to tenure. The Director will provide administrative oversight for the Public Services division and will direct the development, implementation, and marketing of new and existing programs to provide user-centered services, reference, and instruction. The successful candidate will be a member of the Library’s senior administrative group, sharing responsibility for the overall direction of the University Library with other key managers including Directors for Technical Services and Technology, Archives and Special Collections, and Administrative Services. This position will report directly to the Dean of the Library.
Ottenheimer Library’s materials budget is in excess of $1 million annually. Its materials holdings include: nearly a half million monographs, 11,000 electronic books, access to over 28,000 electronic journals, 3,600 active periodical subscriptions, in excess of one million microforms, and more than 115 electronic databases. The Library’s integrated library system is Innovative Interfaces.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide vision, direction, and operational management for the planning, development, marketing, delivery, and assessment of all user services functions (reference, instruction, government documents, circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan.)
2. Supervise and evaluate the Head of Reference and Head of Access Services.
3. Coordinate public services activities and workflow with other areas of the library and university.
4. Work with the Director of Technical Services and Technology to identify, evaluate, and promote new technologies in user services.
5. Participate in library-wide programs such as collection development, assessment, and strategic planning.
6. Take a leadership role, locally and nationally, in identifying and implementing new developments in the field through active participation in professional organizations.
REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS; at least five years of professional experience in public services areas such as circulation, interlibrary loan, reference, and instruction in a research or academic library; demonstrated understanding of academic teaching and research needs; ability to view issues from a broad library-wide perspective; excellent interpersonal, communication, and planning skills.
PREFERRED: Experience with assessment of library services, strategic planning, and project management; three years successful management and supervision of librarians and paraprofessionals; experience with integrated library systems; proven skills in the application of technology to enhance effectiveness in public services operations;
second advanced degree; qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.
