Assistant Cataloger - Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History - Philadelphia PA

CHF has an opening for an Assistant Cataloger in its Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History.  Located in Philadelphia’s historic district, CHF seeks to preserve, analyze, and make known the history of the chemical and molecular sciences and affiliated industries.Essential Functions:
Organize physically and intellectually all library materials; Responsible for the acquisition of donations and gifts-in-kind including donor relations, correspondence and materials selection; search OCLC, download/import bibliographic and/or authority records for donations and new acquisitions.  Perform adaptive cataloging in a variety of languages and formats; Catalog library materials using AACR2rev, MARC formats, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Rule Interpretations; Classify library materials using Library of Congress Classification or other systems as specified by local practice; Create/update authority records for Library’s online automated authority file; Maintain quality control procedures; Perform database maintenance or enrichment functions as required; Participate in library planning; Undertakes technical processing of library materials including bar-coding, radio tagging, labeling and shelving; Prepares materials for shipment to bindery preparation and ensures quality control of bindery products.

The Othmer Library of Chemical History houses more than 100,000 print volumes and more than 37,000 volumes in microform equivalents that form an unrivaled resource for the history of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and industries. The collection contains primary sources from the 15th century through the 20th century.  The library houses approximately 1,800 journal titles, totaling 59,000 volumes. Several titles span nearly 200 years.  In 2004 the Othmer Library became the steward of the Roy G. Neville Historical Chemical Library, a collection of roughly 6,000 rare volumes dating from 1478 onward.

Qualifications:
M.L.S. or equivalent experience in Technical Services.  MLIS candidates will also be considered.  Minimum of two (2) years library experience in Technical Services preferred.  Demonstrated knowledge of bibliographic utilities such as OCLC including all USMARC formats.

Preferred Qualification:
Experience with an integrated library system such as Innovative Interfaces.  Knowledge of AACR2rev, Library of Congress classification and subject headings.  Working knowledge of technical services processes.  Ability to work independently and set daily priorities.  Strong interpersonal and service orientations.  Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.  Must possess flexibility in adapting to change as library priorities and information technologies evolve.  Ability to perform physical work associated with handling library materials including lifting up to 40 lbs.  Must be able to tolerate dusty environments.
