The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a knowledgeable, energetic, highly motivated person to provide leadership in the provision of resource description and access
that helps users discover, identify, locate, and access content. This new position catalogs materials in a diverse range of formats, using appropriate metadata and levels of description, and serves as primary supervisor for four staff including the Electronic Journals Assistant, a position providing support for all aspects of electronic journal access.
The Health Sciences Library is the primary library for the UNC-CH Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health and the University of North Carolina Hospitals. It also serves the health
information needs of the entire university. The library serves the state’s health professionals through the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Library and Information Services Network.
Resources Management Services selects and acquires or provides
electronic access to content in support of the curriculum, research, and
patient care in the Division of Health Affairs and UNC Hospitals;
negotiates licenses with vendors and publishers to maximize client
access; creates records to identify, locate, and access content in a
diverse range of formats using appropriate metadata, tags, and levels of
description; obtains content not available at UNC in response to user
requests; delivers content from HSL collections upon request; repairs
and maintains the electronic links and the physical collections;
prepares materials for binding; manages the content and access budget;
collaborates with others to ensure permanent and effective access to
content in digital and other formats; builds and enhances access to
special collections of historical and other valued content in digital
and other formats; actively participates in the application of
information systems and technology to manage the library’s scholarly
content effectively. Resources Management Services has 17 FTE staff
including 5 Librarians, 12 support staff, temporary staff and student
assistants. The overall mission of Resources Management Services is to
ensure successful access to and delivery of information needed by
library patrons, whether delivered directly to the patron or added to
the collection.
The Cataloging and Metadata Coordinator provides leadership in the
provision of resource description and access that helps users discover,
identify, locate, and access content in a diverse range of formats.
Participates in library, campus and regional efforts to continuously
improve users’ success at finding the content they need via the catalog
and other finding aids, including needs assessment, usability testing,
and interface design. Catalogs complex materials in a diverse range of
formats and languages, using appropriate metadata and levels of
description. Performs ENHANCE and NACO work and reviews authority
control processing reports. Monitors OCLC and SOLINET-related
developments, standards development, cataloging rule changes, and
changes in LC and NLM cataloging practices/policies; analyzes the impact
of these changes and determines and implements the appropriate
responses. Serves as primary supervisor for four staff (1 EPA, 3 SPA),
including the Electronic Journals Assistant, a position providing
support for all aspects of electronic journal access. Assigns and
monitors the work of staff handling these activities, determines unit
priorities, assists them in interpreting standards, provides coaching
and feedback, conducts regular performance appraisals, and trains or
develops continuing education opportunities. Leads efforts to evaluate
unit workflow (cost analyses, outsourcing options, etc.) and
collaborates on formal and informal research with HSL colleagues and
others. Provides training or technical advice to library staff or users
undertaking resource description, metadata assignment, or similar projects.
With other RMS managers, this position defines policies and procedures,
oversees analysis, adjustment and documentation of workflow, policies,
and assignments. Participates in the leadership of RMS by attending
management meetings and working collaboratively with other managers and
staff. Represents HSL on the campus’ Millennium ILS
Cataloging/Authority Control Advisory Committee or equivalent groups.
Reports to the Head of Resources Management Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
(Required): ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent.
Cataloging and database management experience in an academic, research,
or medical library. Knowledge of applicable national cataloging and
database standards (AACR2rev, LCSH and/or MeSH, LC and/or NLM
classification, MARC, non-MARC metadata schemes, RLIN or OCLC cataloging
systems).
(Preferred): A minimum of three years post-MLS cataloging and database
management experience in an academic, research, or medical library.
Supervisory and training experience. Substantial cataloging experience
in multiple formats. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Commitment to professional growth and awareness of current/emerging
trends in provision of access to content. Experience with III automated
library system. Evidence of strong planning and project management
skills. Working knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemes other than MARC
(e.g. XML, EAD, DC). Demonstrated aptitude for developing and
implementing innovative and creative approaches that enhance resource
description and discovery of content.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Minimum salary $45,000, however salary is commensurate with
qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave,
sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
