The University of California, Santa Cruz Library invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate University Librarian for
Collections and Library Information Systems. The AUL/CLIS is a member of the Library’s senior management team and has overall
responsibility for Library collections and information systems, including collection development, the collection budget,
acquisitions, cataloging and metadata creation, serials management, digitization projects, preservation, scholarly communication, special collections, and archives. The AUL/CLIS will provide vision, direction, and leadership within the library, the UCSC campus, and the University of California library system as the Library redefines its collections in the context of emerging trends in scholarly communication, digital initiatives, shared collections, and the development of next-generation bibliographic and information systems.

The UCSC Library has collections of approximately 1.5 million
volumes, more than 22,000 serials; and a staff of 120 located in two
library buildings, the McHenry Library, and the Science and
Engineering Library. The Library has the most intensely used
collection in the UC system. Deeply embedded in the Library’s culture
is a tradition of flexibility and innovation which has enabled the
Library to participate actively in the University’s instruction and
research programs. Excellent service is another hallmark of the UCSC
Library, as is partnership with the other UC libraries and the
California Digital Library. The UCSC Library uses the Innovative
Interfaces Inc.(III) ILS and adds approximately 35,000 records to the
III and the Melvyl system catalogs each year.
Responsibilities:
* Working in conjunction with the University Librarian, the
AUL-Public Services, and the AUL -Administrative Services
collaborates on library-wide strategic planning, policy formulation,
establishing priorities, allocating the budget, and planning for the
McHenry Library addition and renovation.
* Works closely with other library managers to ensure coordinated
and efficient handling of all aspects of collections and information
systems. Supervises Collection Development, Technical Services,
Special Collections and Archives, and Digital Initiatives.
* Monitors campus academic priorities and growth; oversees the
collection budget and other fiscal resources in consultation with
other library staff.
* Reviews, tracks and disseminates statistics, budget
information, reports, approval plan profiles, license information,
policies, collection use statistics, and other information that
supports the work of collection planners and selectors.
* Provides leadership regarding the development and management of
collections in all formats and languages that support undergraduate
and graduate-level academic programs and campus research centers.
* Researches and develops both short range and strategic library
plans regarding scholarly communication, digitization programs,
evolving information systems, information-seeking behavior and
changing user expectations for library services, information
literacy, and assessment.
* Coordinates technical services workflow to meet the highest
efficiency and service standards.
* Works closely with the Library Development Officer to support
Library fundraising and development.
* Represents the UCSC Library in UC system-wide planning for
scholarly communication, digital initiatives, collection development,
and information systems, including the development and implementation
of a next-generation system for bibliographic access. Represents the
Library in relevant regional and national forums.
* Contributes to the library profession through scholarly
publications, presentations and participation in the work of
professional organizations.
Required Qualifications
* Masters in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA
accredited institution, or equivalent.
* Seven years of increasingly responsible professional library
experience in an academic or research library, or equivalent,
including library information systems, technical services, and/or
collection development.
* Demonstrated leadership, planning, and organizational skills,
with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks with major
impact on critical operations of the organization.
* Successful managerial and supervisory experience equivalent to
at least a departmental head level with demonstrated ability to lead
staff through organizational change.
* Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff,
and students in a multicultural and diverse environment.
* Familiarity with current trends in academic library information
services, higher education, and in the use of information systems in
a teaching, learning, and research environment.
* Strong analytical skills and budgeting experience.
* Experience with licenses, contracts, and vendors.
* Experience in the development and application of innovative
approaches to collections and/or technical services operations.
Preferred
* Professional experience in acquisitions, cataloging, special
collections, and/or collection development.
* Ability to participate in library fundraising.
* Prior experience with library technology planning.
* Knowledge of and experience with digitization of library
materials in a variety of formats.
General Information
The initial appointment will be at the rank of Assistant University
Librarian or Associate University Librarian, depending upon
background and experience. Salary is negotiable with a minimum of
$75,000.
Assistant and Associate University Librarians are non-senate academic
appointees. They are entitled to two days per month of vacation
leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits
granted to non-faculty academic personnel. UC has an excellent
retirement system and a wide variety of health, dental, vision, and
life insurance plans in addition to other benefits. Relocation
