System Librarian (Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy)
The Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy, is seeking a librarian with energy, experience, initiative, enthusiasm, and good judgment to serve as Systems Librarian.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Generates code associated with the presentation, development, implementation and maintenance of web-based resources.
- Provides programming for major applications underlying the web environment by creating/modifying web pages and links using currently acceptable standards and practices.
- Provides system administration support for the integrated library system (Innovative Millennium) in collaboration with the Head of Systems.
- Assists in maintaining the Interlibrary Loan System (ILLiad) and other Library systems as required.
- Provides troubleshooting support for software, hardware, and network issues as required.
The Naval Academy is the Navy’s undergraduate college, with some 4,300 students, approximately 570
civilian and military faculty, and 20 major fields of study in three academic divisions (seven in Engineering, seven in Math & Science, and six in Humanities/Social Sciences). The Academy has produced eight Rhodes Scholars in the past three
years alone.
The Nimitz Library has a user-oriented staff of 40
FTE (including 18 professional librarians) and some
587,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals, plus
government documents, microforms, extensive holdings
in Special Collections and Archives, and a growing
array of electronic resources. For additional

Located in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland and
“the sailing capital of America ,” the Naval
Academy is 30 miles from both Washington, D.C., and
Baltimore, in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Area.
Minimum salary is $44,856 (first step of GS-09 pay
grade) or higher depending upon experience and other
qualifications.
KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of presentation, development,
implementation and maintenance of web-based
resources.
2. Skill in working with XHTML, CSS, CGI, PERL,
JavaScript codes and scripts.
3. Knowledge of integrated library systems and
metadata in academic libraries as well as the
relationship among components including
Acquisitions/Serials, Cataloging, Circulation,
WebOPAC, Report Generation and System
Administration.
4. Knowledge of web-based applications and network
resources associated with academic libraries
including front-ends for relational databases,
OpenURL resolvers, Federated Search Engines and
Interlibrary Loan systems and integrated library
systems.
5. Conceptual knowledge of system components,
networked environments and library operations.
6. Ability to work diplomatically with a variety of
personnel while under pressure to find
appropriate remedies in a timely fashion.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- An ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science
degree.
