HEAD OF REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION SERVICES (Western Washington University)

Western Washington University Libraries seeks a librarian with vision, flexibility, enthusiasm, initiative, decisiveness, and strong service orientation to provide leadership and direction to its Reference and Instruction Services Department. This is a key position in Western’s Libraries for designing, administering and assessing user-centered library support to students, faculty and staff in their pursuits of scholarship of research and learning. To accomplish these objectives, the successful candidate should be well informed of trends in scholarly communication, information technologies, and higher education; and have experience in managing change and flexibility in response to user expectations.

This is a full time tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor (Librarians are under twelve month contract with vacation and other benefits). The candidate’s record must show sufficient professional accomplishments to warrant the terms of this appointment. The position reports directly to the University Librarian and is member of the two management groups in the library: the Department Heads and the Libraries’ Faculty. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position will be available July 1, 2007.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED (Must be addressed in cover letter or vita):

An MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program

Recent and successful experience in administrative leadership and supervision of faculty and staff members in a medium to large academic library

Evidence of professional accomplishments and/or publications, and experience appropriate for continued employment in the library faculty at the level of Associate Professor

PREFERRED:

Commitment to the delivery and assessment of innovative user-centered services

Ability to provide flexible strategic directions in a constantly changing environment

Commitment to information literacy

Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills

Strong and decisive leadership skills

Participatory management style and promotion of team work

Strong public service orientation

Understanding of current trends in scholarly communications, information technologies, and higher education

Knowledge of appropriate technologies in support of innovative library services

Ability to create productive working relationships within the library and between the library and the university faculty, students, and staff

Committed to mentoring and professional development of faculty and staff

Second master’s in addition to library degree

 

UNIVERSITY

The Western Libraries consist of the main Wilson Library and a branch Music Library.  The Libraries employ 18 librarians and 45 support staff and are committed to providing a high level of service to the campus and broader community.  The library collections include 1.4 million volumes and numerous electronic resources.  The library is an active member in the Orbis Cascade Alliance, and uses the Innovate Interfaces system.  Additional information about the Western Libraries can be viewed through its homepage at http://www.library.wwu.edu/ .     

Western Washington University is a comprehensive state university, highly rated in several national publications, with 13,000 students and 630 faculty in seven colleges and the graduate school.  The campus, overlooking Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands, is located in Bellingham, a coastal community of 67,000 renowned for its wide range of recreational activities and cultural events.  Perennially recognized by the national media as one of the best places to live in America, Bellingham is close to two major metropolitan areas.  Seattle is 90 miles south and Vancouver, British Columbia, is 55 miles north.  The North Cascades mountain range, including Mt. Baker and its prime snow skiing venue, lies just to the east. .
